Program: "How to Create Useful Software Process Documentation"

Location: Clark State Community College, Rm 204

Description: Whether your organization is using ISO 9001, the Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integrated® (CMMI), Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma or some other quality framework, one of the cornerstones is to document the process. Unfortunately, efforts to document the process often end up in voluptuous volumes of verbosity that sit on the shelf and gather dust. This presentation “How to Create Useful Software Process Documentation” introduces a simple, practical method for defining and documenting software processes that are easy to understand, easy to use and easy to maintain.

Speaker: Linda is president of The Westfall Team, which provides software engineering, quality, and project management training and consulting services. She has more than 30 years of experience in real time software engineering, quality, project management and metrics.  She is the author of The Certified Software Quality Engineer Handbook from ASQ Quality Press.  She is a past chair of the ASQ Software Division and has served as the Division’s Program Chair and Certification Chair and on the ASQ National Certification Board.  Linda is an ASQ fellow and has a PE in Software Engineering from Texas.

Linda’s hobby is pyrotechnics.  She makes her own fireworks from scratch by mixing the powders, making the stars and fuels; and constructing the shells, rockets, comets and mines.

December 2011 - NO MEETING SCHEDULED

November 2011

Date: Thursday, November 17, 2011

Program: "CMMI and SCRUM - Power Partners in Product Development"

Location: Clark State Community College, Rm 204

Description: Everywhere we look, agile methods are taking hold. Whether it's SCRUM or XP, Spiral or Crystal, we are all starting to see the positive effects that agile methods are having on our work. But it's not all good news. Many "agile" shops are not getting anything close to the results they were hoping for. Management still waits for information and makes decisions based on perception. Projects are still late and over budget. People are not trained and the same mistakes are being made time and time again.

But there is an answer. the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), the leading framework for continuous improvement can ALSO be used to improve agile methods! CMMI is fully compatible with SCRUM and XP , and it fills in the blanks in a way that makes the investment in agile both powerful and productive.

Speaker: Jeff Dalton is Broadsword's President, Certified Lead Appraiser, CMMI Instructor, Scrum Master and author of "agileCMMI" which is Broadword's leading methodology for incremental and iterative process improvement. He serves as the representative for small businesses on the SEI's Partner Advisory Baord (PAB) for 2011 and was recently elected to serve as Chair for the PAB in 2012. He is President of the Great Lakes Software Process Improvement NEtwork (GL-SPIN).

Jeff holds degrees in Music and Computer Science and builds experimental airplanes in his spare time. His first degree was in Music from Johns Hopkins University. He has performed with orchestras in Seville Spain, Mexico City and Baltimore. He earned a second degree in Computer Science in 1988.

Program: "Incident, Issue or Risk - What to Track, When and How"

Location: Clark State Community College, Rm 204

We will also see how they both differ from risks and how each gets tracks and reported to management.

He has more than 15 years of experience as a process improvement consultant working with large financial firms, defense contractors, telecommunications, aerospace and healthcare. Program: "Update on New Version of CMMI Appraisal Method and Services Model"

New Location: Clark State University

Description: We are currently in the midst of a transition from CMMI v1.2 to v1.3.  Although we have discussed the changes to CMMI-DEV in detail in the past at the Dayton SPIN, the components of the CMMI suite are much more than just the CMMI-DEV model only.  Two very important components of the CMMI suite of products have changed significantly.  The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) defines the method that must be followed in conducting appraisals using CMMI.  The CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC) model describes best practices for any type of services organization.

The Method Definition Document (MDD) for SCAMPI V1.3 was released in March 2011, and the CMMI-SVC v1.3 was released in December 2010. Both of these CMMI suite components include significant changes from version 1.2.
During this discussion we will highlight the changes in both of these components, but spend the bulk of the time on the appraisal method because those changes are most significant. We will highlight the changes, the expectations and the potential impacts of the changes.
This session is important for anyone planning to conduct or participate in a CMMI based appraisal after November 2011 since the SCAMPI MDD v1.2 will sunset at that time, and for anyone using, or considering the CMMI-SVC model.

Speakers: Dan Potts is Manager, Process Improvement for Ontario Systems in Muncie, Indiana. He is an SEI-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Development, Six Sigma Black Belt and Internal Auditor. Dan has more than 30 years of experience in various roles with software development organizations. He specializes in process improvement using best practices such as CMMI, ISO9001 and SAS70.
